The Sunday Morning

I find it puzzling that many of our local churches seem to overlook the incredible outreach potential they have every Sunday morning. Tradition, methods, and rituals often obstruct the opportunity to share the gospel with the lost.

Walking into numerous churches, it often feels like a journey back in time—but not to the ’80s or ’90s, rather the ’50s or ’60s. While the ’80s and ’90s are making a retro comeback, being stuck in past eras can hinder churches from effectively reaching the lost. Many seem to tie their methods directly to the message, which, in my view, lacks a strong biblical foundation. The Bible addresses methods primarily to ensure that non-believers won’t be turned off by the church, and there’s limited emphasis on specific methods in the Word. It’s crucial for churches to embrace a timeless approach that resonates with today’s diverse audience.

Pastor Rick Warren, renowned for his influential book “The Purpose Driven Life” and for founding Saddleback Church in the 1980s, emphasizes a crucial perspective in his work “The Purpose Driven Church.” He asserts, “The church should be seeker-sensitive but must not be seeker-driven.” This concept encourages flexibility in meeting people’s needs while remaining steadfast to the Bible. In essence, it’s a balance between adapting to the concerns of how to reach the lost and remaining committed to the timeless truths of scripture.

Whether it’s an intimate gathering in a small church or a concert-style mega-church, the un-churched, de-churched, broken, and lost should consistently take precedence in our Sunday morning approach to ministry.

Let’s take a glimpse into the style of Adventure Church of Yuba City, situated in the rural community located approximately 35 miles north of Sacramento, CA. This particular style resonates well with the unique characteristics of this community.
